She couldn't win over the far-right even despite Bush's most sincere "Trust Me." I guess winks and nods and use of coded language about abortion ("Her religion is part of her life"; "She shares my judicial philosophy") isn't going to satisfy the American Taliban anymore. Who the next nominee is will go a long way in showing us who's really in charge. If it's a fire-breathing anti-abortion zealot (as I suspect it will be), it'll be proof--if proof is needed--that the religious fundamentalist wing of the Republican party is the undisputed power behind the throne.
